About the European Union
The European Union (or EU) is a unique political and economic partnership comprising 27 sovereign member states located predominantly on the European continent.
Established in 1993 following the signing of the Treaty on European Union (Maastricht Treaty), the EU built upon and broadened the competencies of the previous European Economic Community. Representing an estimated 500 million citizens, the EU generates approximately 30% of global nominal GDP.
Through standardized systems of laws applicable across all member states, the European Union has established an internal single market ensuring the unrestricted movement of people, goods, services, and capital. Under the Schengen Agreement, internal border and passport controls have been dismantled, affording international university students seamless travel across Europe throughout their degree studies.
