ABŞ – da magistr dərəcəsini iki illikdir. Təhsil müddəti ixtisasdan, tələbənin hazırlıq səviyyəsindən, tədris proqramının strukturundan asılı olaraq dəyişir.
Bakalavr dərəcəsi almış tələbələr dərəcələrin magistr pilləsini seçməklə öz təhsillərini davam etdirə bilərlər. Bu pillə adətən konkret sahə üzrə yüksək ixtisas verən iki illik dərəcədir. Tələbələr bəzən yaxın əlaqəli sahə üzrə bakalavr dərəcəsinə malik olduqları zaman magistr dərəcəsi proqramına qəbul edilirlər. Lakin Azərbaycandan fərqli olaraq burada ixtisas seçimində sərbəstsiniz. Məsələn, humanitar sahəni bitirən bakalavr məzunu tamamilə dəqiq elmlər sahəsində təhsil ala bilərlər.
Amerikada da çox sayda universitetlərdə master proqramı təşkil olunur. Həm özəl universitetlər, həm də dövlət universitetləri müxtəlif ixtisaslar üzrə magistratura proqramına tələbə qəbul edir.
